The cooler weather and changing leaves signal Atlanta’s favorite season and with it, tradition, holidays and festivities. From now through Thanksgiving families are booking their fall family photo sessions with their favorite professional photographer or dusting off their tripods in an attempt to capture a holiday-card-worthy snapshot. Either way, taking them in October or November will ensure you have enough time to order holiday cards and have photos printed for gifts. Going the DIY route this year? Here are 6 beautiful Atlanta locations you might want to try.

  1. Morgan Falls Overlook Park
Located off of Roswell Road in Sandy Springs, this park offers it all -- trees, trails and a beautiful body of water in the form of the Morgan Falls Reservoir. The mountainous hills surrounding the park also offer a lovely backdrop and a small pier allows you to get close to the water. There are swinging benches and low stone walls to sit on for variety. After your photos, the kids will love playing on the covered playground or enjoying lunch on one of the picnic tables in the pavilion.

  2. Murphey Candler Park Conservancy
Nestled in Brookhaven in the midst of trees and homes is Murphey Candler Park, right across the street from the baseball fields. There are 4 parking areas surrounding the park but the main entrance and parking lot is so small that if you blink you might miss it. This park offers plenty of photo ops in the form of trees but its selling point is the bridge over a man-made Murphey Candler Lake. Through the trees is an old-fashion playground for a whimsical and more lifestyle-oriented photo session.

  3. Old Mill Park
Wrought with Civil War history, the ruins of the Roswell Manufacturing Co. Mills can be found right on the banks of Vickery Creek in Roswell. The waterfall was created when the creek was dammed to provide water power to the old machine shop and a covered pedestrian bridge was placed over the creek to connect the Old Mill Park trailhead to the Chattahoochee River trail system. These relics in the park are photographer favorites and provide for beautiful and unique backdrops.

  4. Piedmont Park

For all the same reasons we chose Piedmont Park as one of the 8 Best Places to Take Engagement and Wedding Photos, it's made the list for our favorite beautiful fall family photo locations as well. Piedmont Park is located in the heart of Atlanta and offers not only your traditional park landscape but a skyscape of the city as well.

  5. Stone Mountain Park
Home to the Pumpkin Festival, Stone Mountain Park is a great location to consider for photos this holiday season. Why not consider The Old Gristmill and covered bridge. Another option is to take the Summit Skyride up Stone Mountain for a spectacular view as your backdrop.

  6. Sweetwater Creek State Park
Located just 15 miles from downtown ATL, in Lithia Springs, is Sweetwater Creek State Park. This 2,549-acre Georgia state park is named after Sweetwater Creek which runs through the park and is believed to be "the most visited park in the State". The main [red] trail will follow the stream and take you directly to the ruins of the New Manchester Manufacturing Company, a textile mill which burned during the Civil War. This is a luscious green area and the juxtaposition between the gorgeous scenery and brick remnants will make for beautifully textured photos. Be sure to check with gastateparks.org for more information about photography fees and availability due to weather.
