July Fourth falls on a Thursday this year, and you know what that means-the opportunity for a long weekend. Here are five fun and patriotic things to do in Atlanta.

  1. Atlanta is home to some amazing playgrounds with swings, ball fields, splash pads and more. Most also have BBQ facilities so it’s a great opportunity to get outside with the kids, play and roast a few hot dogs. Here are our picks for the 21 best playgrounds in Atlanta.

  2. While Atlanta is most definitely a metropolitan city, it is also fortunate to have plenty of green space, which means lots of beautiful locales for picnics. Choose from choices ranging from a serene waterfront location to a fun park with activities for the kids, or catch a concert under the stars while enjoying your favorite picnic treats. 3. No Independence Day celebration would be complete without fireworks, and if you plan correctly, you can catch more than one display over this long weekend. Check out our list of Atlanta’s most popular fireworks shows in metro Atlanta.

  4. The AJC Peachtree Road Race marks its 50th running in 2019. In the men's footrace, 19-year-old Rhonex Kipruto of Kenya says he intends to break the men's Peachtree record, which has stood since 1996, three years before Kipruto was born. The women's footrace is headlined by Brigid Kosgei of Kenya, who hasn't lost a race in almost a year. Athletes in the Shepherd Center Wheelchair Division will be competing for the $50,000 bonus, which would be the largest prize in wheelchair racing history. The race is accompanied by plenty of music and fun and followed up with an after-party at Piedmont Park, making it event not to be missed.

  5. You won't want to miss the Fantastic Fourth Celebration at Stone Mountain Park. The Lasershow and “biggest fireworks finale ever” is a tradition worth experiencing, presented every night of the holiday weekend. Spend a day exploring Stone Mountain Park and finish out the day with this fireworks spectacular.
