Waterscapes and War Heroes

Start in the town of Hartwell in North Georgia. After a restful night's sleep in your choice of lodging (including lake front cabins) in Hartwell, start your morning with a leisurely stroll along the Lake Hartwell Dam Overlook (the largest man-made lake east of the Mississippi), and a visit to the Hartwell Project Office, featuring exhibits on native wildlife and construction of the lake.

Visit the historic Teasley-Holland House (c.1881) housing the historical society museum. While there you can pick up information on the surrounding area

Located along US Hwy 29 South, you will find a monument marking the Cherokee Center of the World, a ceremonial ground and early trading route

End your visit to Hartwell with unique dining and shopping opportunities in the 12-block Downtown Historic District

Travel along Highways 77 and 17 north to Toccoa, hometown to the world's strongest man, Paul Anderson.

See the Stephens County Historic and Currahee Military Museum housed in the recently restored depot. It features WWII artifacts and Camp Toccoa's contribution to the war effort as the birthplace of Band of Brothers. Also check out Travelers Rest (c.1833), an early stagecoach stop.

Located off Hwy 17, visit Toccoa Falls on the campus of Toccoa Falls College. The falls, at 186ft, is one of the highest free-falling waterfalls east of the Mississippi.

End your day shopping or dining in the historic downtown shopping district.
