Hear the History

King Jr. The Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site includes a visitors center depicting the story of Dr. King and the Civil Rights Movement; the restored King birth home; Ebenezer Baptist Church, where three generations of the King family preached; and Dr. King's burial site.

Try the Sweet Auburn Bread Company, formerly housed in the Sweet Auburn Curb Market. Chef/Owner Sonya Jones' bakery is now right at home at 234 Auburn Ave. NE, in the same neighborhood where she grew up and learned to love baking as a young girl. Her famous sweet potato cheesecake recipe, which President Bill Clinton raved about on a visit to Atlanta in 1999, has been featured in numerous magazines and newspapers and even on the Food Network and in one of Rachael Ray's cookbooks.

The Atlanta History Center houses permanent and traveling exhibitions as well as a wing celebrating the Centennial Olympic Games. See the historic Tullie Smith House, an 1840s farm with gardens and live farm animals, and stroll through nature trails to visit the 1910 Swan House mansion.

While in Atlanta, don't miss the Margaret Mitchell House and Museum, original home of Gone With the Wind author, Margaret Mitchell. Almost thirty of Bob Adelman's photographs, also featured in KING: The Photobiography of Martin Luther King, Jr. are currently displayed on the first floor of the Margaret Mitchell House.

South City Kitchen is where Southern cuisine meets today's contemporary style. Dine on sautéed shrimp and scallops, buttermilk fried chicken, crispy whole catfish, and desserts .
