West End Historic District is located southwest of downtown Atlanta south of I-20. Named after London’s fashionable theater district, the West End suburb grew to prominence in the late 19th century. Today, it is home to the Atlanta University Center which includes Spelman College, Morehouse College and Clark Atlanta University. Established as a museum in 1913, the Wren’s Nest in West End is the oldest continuously operated museum in Atlanta. Former home of author of Joel Chandler Harris, it is an excellent and rare example of the early Victorian Queen Anne style in the Atlanta area. The Hammonds House, once home of a prominent Atlanta physician, now houses many 19th-century antiques and a notable collection of African-American art.
