Steve Smith
Chairman of the Board of Directors Atlanta Convention and Visitors Bureau
Steve Smith is vice president of Government and Community Affairs for Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. (TBS, Inc). Smith serves as the company's liaison to elected officials and community leaders, helping to guide the development and implementation of all Turner community relations and employee volunteer projects. He also consults on the review, selection and funding of community non-profit organizations through TBS, Inc.'s corporate philanthropy program.
Prior to joining TBS, Inc., Smith was director of administrative services for Georgia Public Broadcasting. He managed daily operations for the 200+ employee digital broadcasting company, directing procurement and purchasing, security, corporate fleet, space allocation and marketing. From 1991 to 1997, Smith served as a principal in the Fulton County School System, responsible for supervising and implementing curriculum for students, recruiting teachers and initiating and developing partnerships with businesses to support school projects and programs.
Smith is a graduate of Leadership Atlanta and Leadership Georgia. He serves on the boards of directors of the following organizations: Atlantic Capital Bank, Georgia Chamber of Commerce (vice president, membership), Atlanta Convention and Visitors Bureau (Chairman), 100 Black Men of Atlanta, Georgia Partnership for Excellence in Education, Metro Atlanta Arts & Culture Coalition, Metro YMCA, Association of Corporate Contributions Professionals (ACCP), 191 Club and the Atlanta Business League. Smith serves on the boards of advisors for the following organizations: Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce, Creating Pride Arts Program. He was selected to participate in Class V of the National Association of Minorities in Communications (NAMIC) Executive Leadership Program, and Smith was appointed by Governor Sonny Perdue to the 2006 Independent Redistricting Task Force and appointed by Mayor Shirley Franklin to her Atlanta Arts & Cultural Funding Task Force.
Smith earned a bachelor's degree in English Education from the University of Georgia, and a master's degree in Educational Management, also from the University of Georgia. He also completed an Ed.S in Educational Management from Troy University. Smith and his wife, Debra, live in Atlanta with their son, Steven, Jr.
