Stone Mountain
Just 16 miles east of downtown Atlanta, Stone Mountain offers modern-day visitors a rare look at a historic railroad town. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Stone Mountain Historic District features buildings dating as far back as the 1830s. Architectural styles represented within the Stone Mountain Historic District include Craftsman bungalows, English Vernacular Revival, Greek Revival and Folk Victorian. The Stone Mountain Village retail area is home to several dozen shops, galleries and restaurants.
The city of Stone Mountain is located next to Georgia's top tourist attraction, Stone Mountain Park, which attracts four million visitors a year. Stone Mountain Park highlights include children's attractions, live entertainment, nightly laser shows, nature trails and the mountain for which the theme park is named. Celebrated as the largest granite "mountain" in the world, Stone Mountain, Georgia, is also known for its Confederate Memorial Carving, which pays tribute to three Confederate leaders: Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee and "Stonewall" Jackson.
