Clayton County
Nowhere in metro Atlanta is the legend of Gone With the Wind more alive than in Clayton County, Georgia. The ancestral home of Margaret Mitchell, Clayton County, GA is said to be the inspiration for the Pulitzer Prize-winning author's epic tale of the Civil War. The GWTW experience in Clayton County includes the Road to Tara Museum, housed in the 1867 train depot in historical Jonesboro, as well as the 1839 Greek Revival plantation home at Stately Oaks Plantation. Both sites are featured in the Landmarks Through History Tour. The area also hosts annual reenactments of the Civil War Battle of Jonesboro. Other spots of interest in Clayton County are the Georgia Archives, the Atlanta State Farmers' Market, the Arts Clayton art gallery and Clayton State University's Spivey Hall, a 400-seat recital hall renowned for its acoustics and its pipe organ. The Georgia county's recreational facilities include the BEACH at Clayton County, Georgia International Park, which features a water park, hiking/biking trails, volleyball courts, a tennis center, a gym, picnic areas and fishing lakes. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport also makes its home in Clayton County, GA, which is located south of downtown Atlanta.
