Trick-or-treat yourself to the many things to do this weekend in Atlanta. Here's where to start.

Carol’s Picks

Carol is the ATL Insider’s culture vulture. If there is a new exhibit in town or a new show on the stage, Carol is the first to know about it.

  • The Phantoms of the Orchestra, Sunday 
    Here's a family concert at Atlanta Symphony Hall, where the kids can wear their costumes. The Magic Circle Mime Company is center stage with spooky music swirling throughout the concert hall. Oh, and there is a costume contest, too. 

  • Freed Spirits at Horizon Theatrethrough Oct. 30 
    The setting: Historic Oakland Cemetery. The plot: A tornado whips through the cemetery and out pops a ghost. Hang on to your seat. (I've not seen this play, but a reliable source told me it's really good.)

Joleen is a work-at-home mom to a 3-year-old son. She and her family live in the 'burbs but enjoy regularly traveling into the city for family-friendly fun and adventure.

  • Halloween Hikes, Friday and Saturday
    For family-friendly and non-scary fall fun, head to Chattahoochee Nature Center for one of the staff’s favorite festivals. Meet several favorite costumed characters on your hike along a lighted woodland trail, make crafts, play games and roast s’mores by the campfire. Cash-only refreshment stand for cookies, hot chocolate and cider. The event is from 7 to 10 p.m.; children are invited to wear their costumes but be sure to bundle up. Tickets are $10 per person; children younger than 2 are free.

  • Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos), Sunday
    Free admission day at Atlanta History Center. Visitors of all ages can experience a Day of the Dead Festival with storytelling, crafts, Mexican food and entertainment. View a display of altars honoring lost family and friends that are decorated with flowers, favorite foods and beverages. Refreshments available for purchase.
