It seems like there's no escaping the meteoric rise of Pokémon GO. Whether you're a longtime fan (or, uh, your kids like it – yeah, that's right! Your kids!) or you've never heard the word until recently, here are some tips for safely and successfully mastering the fine art of catching 'em all in Atlanta for beginners and masters alike.

  • Head to the nearest Atlanta landmark. No matter what part of town you're in, local landmarks and iconic attractions are often "Gyms" and "Poké Stops" in the augmented-reality world of Pokémon Go. The World of Coca-Colathe Varsity and Trader Vic's at Hilton Atlanta are all gyms where you can battle the creatures you've collected once you are high enough. Poké Stops are more numerous – look for statues, public art, bookstores and other local establishments to pick up supplies for your pokémon.

  • Turn on battery saver mode! Activating this in the settings menu conserves battery by turning off the screen when it detects that you're not holding your phone up to your face. This will also help you be more aware of your surroundings without missing any nearby creatures, as it will give you a little buzz when a wild something-or-other appears.

  • Stop and Go. Spin the wheel at every Poké Stop and stock up on poké-balls. It is possible to run out, especially the first time you encounter a flying type pokémon like Zubat. Be sure you've got more coming in than going out.

  • Take the family for a walk in the park. The app turns a serene family stroll into a virtual safari, and parks make a great safe place to roam without traffic. (Even the National Park Service thinks so.) Whether you're out hunting for rare monsters in Centennial Olympic Park, Historic Fourth Ward Park, Woodruff Park or Piedmont Park, you'll be sure to come home with a fresh batch of beasties in your collection.

  • Collaborate with other players. See that lady holding up her phone at arm's length, like she's taking a picture of nothing in particular? That's the "I'm catching pokémon" look. Don't be afraid to ask other players what they've found and where. Trainers new and old alike love sharing their findings.

  • Use the online maps. If you want to level up quickly without all the aimless wandering, there are user-created maps where players are logging the pokémon they've found. Use this collaborative map (created by redditor /u/dcnewbie21 and the Pokemon GO Atlanta subreddit) to find all gyms and Poké Stops in Atlanta and build your collection in a hurry.
